More than 400 cats and dogs will have been desexed as part of the SPCA’s mobile desexing campaign, preventing around 1000 unwanted animals from being born into struggling families unable to afford to feed them. Of the seven rural Northland towns visited, Dargaville saw the biggest turnout, followed by Ahipara.

St John Ambulance Mangawhai will be selling Christmas trees from 3pm today at the Mangawhai Ambulance Station. As well as trees, stands and lights will be available. Tress sell out fast every year so they advise getting in early to secure one.

And The Professionals Ukelele Group will be at the Bream Bay Community Support  Trust in Ruakaka this morning from 10:30. Take your own instrument or borrow one there, and learn some Christmas carols just in time for the festive season.

Whangarei Cat Rescue are looking for foster carers. Carers will be matched to their preferred age range, be taught how to tame wild kittens, medicate sick ones and will have everything kittens need supplied. Anyone interested is asked to email whangareicatrescue@gmail.com

There are more chances to pick up sone unique Christmas goodies at the Maungaturoto Christmas Night Market, tomorrow at 4pm at 98 Hurndall Street in Maungaturoto, and at the Mangawhai Museum Christmas Market on Sunday, in the museum carpark from 10am.

And the first Junior Surf Lesson is on at Waipu Cove this Sunday at 10am. Kids aged four and over are welcome to head down, meet the crew and see what it's all about... just bring togs, a towel and a grown up.
